Fantasy of Flight’s Roar n’ Soar this weekend

By Janice Wood · November 8, 2011 ·

Fantasy of Flight will host its Fifth Annual Roar n’ Soar, a two-day racing extravaganza showcasing the classic racing machines built for land, sea or air.

The event returns for its fifth year with a jam-packed roster of events, including aerial demonstrations, classic car slalom competitions, exhibition fly-bys from vintage race boats, an aerial “dog fight” by powered paragliders, and a sports showcase featuring motocross riders, according to officials. A classic boat show and regatta, and a classic car show also will be held during the weekend.

Roar n’ Soar revs into Fantasy of Flight on Sat., Nov. 12, and Sun., Nov. 13, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. (gates open at 9 a.m.) at the attraction’s lakefront grounds and airfield in Polk City, Fla., midway between Orlando and Tampa.

Throughout the two-day festival, aircraft from Kermit Weeks’ collection, including the Grumman Duck, P51-C and T-6 Texan, will fly.

Giant-scale model aircraft also will strut their stuff in their own demonstration of formation flying, precision aerobatics and aerial combat maneuvers.

A team of powered paragliders will compete in a “kiting” contest to see who can fly their glider the longest. Spectators can chant for their favorite or root for the under-dog while these paragliders participate in an aerial dog fight of sorts to keep their competition from “stealing” their air or tugging on their line.

The Ives Brothers, Kyle and Cody, the youngest motocross team in America, join this year’s line up with their “Original Ball of Steel Show” as well as freestyle distance jumps. The brothers have performed all over the world, on numerous TV shows, and with other famous motocross and motorcycle stuntmen, including Robbie Knievel, Spanky Spangler, the Metal Mulisha, Orange County Choppers, and many more.

Serious collectors can move off the sidelines to showcase their own vehicles and skills in a number of events. Speed through the slalom course, kick up some dirt with off-road RC races or display pre-1985 vintage, classic, exotic or unusual cars, motorcycles and trucks. Online applications are available.

Vintage race boats are just as plentiful at Roar n’ Soar, where the Classic Race Boat Association is hosting as many as 50 race boats in exhibition fly-bys on the mile-and-a-half-course along Lake Agnes. Boats and their drivers will be available between runs to meet with guests and take photos.

Special “Kid’s Crew” children’s activities are offered as part of the event. Kids can try their hand at flying their own hot air balloon and hang gliding simulators in Fantasy of Flight’s “Fun with Flight.”

Guests can save by receiving one free child’s admission (ages 6-12) with each paid adult ticket. Offer is good on both pre-purchased and day-of event tickets. One-day tickets are available for adults for $23 per person with one child ages 6-12 free ($12 value) with a paying adult. Additional one-day child tickets may be purchased for $12 (including tax) per child, ages 6-12.

Two-day tickets are available for adults for $38 (including tax) per person with one child ages 6-12 free ($19 value) with a paying adult. Children 5 and younger are free. Active military and veterans may purchase a weekend event pass for $15 (including tax) per person and receive a free weekend pass for a child. Valid Military ID required at time of purchase.
