ASTM International Committee F37 on Light Sport Aircraft will host the International Workshop on Electric Aircraft Standardization March 28 at the Hilton Garden Inn in Lakeland, Fla. The workshop is being held in conjunction with Committee F37’s standards development meetings at the 38th Annual Sun ’n Fun International Fly-In and Expo.
The emerging market for electric aircraft requires identification of the standards and related activities that can help overcome technical challenges and assist regulators in standardizing the safety and performance issues that lead to certifications, according to ASTM officials. The International Workshop on Electric Aircraft Standardization is the first forum focused on discussion of the technical, standards and conformity assessment issues that will help facilitate routine certification in support of electric flight, officials note.
The objective of the workshop is to bring together electric aircraft builders, innovators and regulators to:
- Review today’s certified electric aircraft in flight;
- Investigate the emerging safety and performance issues; and
- Coordinate among regulators and industry to address technical standardization and research goals that will assist with safer aircraft and routine certifications.
Companies and organizations scheduled to participate in the forum include the FAA, the European Aviation Safety Agency, Sonex Aircraft LLC, Lange Aviation, Pipistrel Aircraft, AeroVironment Inc., the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory, Boeing Global Technology, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, and more.
ASTM International Committee F37 develops standards related to design, performance, quality acceptance tests and safety monitoring for light-sport aircraft (LSA) in support of regulatory objectives. ASTM standards and certification programs for aviation are accepted around the globe and can provide assistance with procurement, communication, design and manufacturing, data coordination and consumer needs and protections.
There is no fee to attend the workshop, but pre-registration is required. Please note that space is limited, and registration is at a first come-first serve basis. Registration will close when capacity has been reached or by March 16.
ASTM International is one of the largest international standards development and delivery systems in the world.
