Checkertails slate reunion

By Janice Wood · April 1, 2012 ·

The 67th annual reunion of the World War II 325th Fighter Group “Checkertail Clan” will be hosted at the “Wings Over Camarillo” Air Show Aug. 15-19, in Camarillo, Calif.

Checkertail veteran pilot Frank Bolek and his daughter, Gayle, were at Sun ’n Fun yesterday visiting the airshow.

The Checkertails, a legendary World War II unit with more air victories and fewer losses than any other in the Mediterranean Theater of operations, are looking forward to seeing all three of their World War II aircraft at the airshow — the P-40 Warhawk, the P-47 Thunderbolt and the P-51 Mustang — and to sharing stories and memorabilia of their famed exploits with the public in the Veteran’s Booth on Saturday, Aug. 18.

Fully a dozen or more Checkertail veteran pilots and crew are expected to attend this year’s Reunion.
