Aviation artist Sam Lyons improving

By Janice Wood · July 12, 2012 ·

A few days ago we reported that famed aviation artist Sam Lyons was hospitalized. Good news today from his wife Mindy that Sam is doing much better and hopes to be out of the hospital soon.

Sam was rush to Lakeland Regional Medical Center in Lakeland, Florida, with what doctors think is an allergic reaction to blood pressure medication. As a result of the reaction, his throat and tongue were badly swollen, so much so that he was on a respirator in the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

Mindy reported today that Sam is doing great and is off the respirator.

“He’s alert and talking and eating clear liquids,” she said. But the real proof of his recovery: “He’s talking art with all the people here at the hospital.”

The plans were to move Sam out of ICU July 12 into a regular room and then, hopefully, he will be released to recuperate at home. “He’s really ready to go home,” Mindy said.

She noted that the couple have received many messages and prayers during this trying time. “You can’t imagine how much that helps,” she said. “We don’t have any family in Lakeland, but it feels like family here.”

If you are a fan of Sam’s work, please send him a get-well card. “Sam doesn’t do Facebook or the web,” noted Mindy, “so funny, get-well cards are the way to go.” You can send them to Sam Lyons, 568 Peninsular Drive, Lakeland, Fla., 33813. [Please note: No flowers or cards to the hospital.]
