Remembering Bob Odegaard

By Janice Wood · February 11, 2013 ·

Just posted to YouTube is a memorial video for Bob Odegaard, who died Sept. 7 in a crash of his Super Corsair as he was practicing for an airshow. The video, put together by Alan Ripa, features a song written by Bob’s good friend, Ed Newberg, titled “I Miss You Bob.”

The video debuted last weekend during a memorial for Bob at the Commemorative Air force Museum at Falcon Field In Mesa, Arizona. According to Alan, there were about 800 people in attendance for the memorial tribute.

I first met Bob, when he was building his TBM Avenger and had started on his P-51.
I’ve spent several days at him and Gerry Beck at their hangers, and flown with both of them. Gerry flew me in a T-6, for those first test flights on Bob’s mustang, when I first the first in-flight photos. I flew with Bob to Reno in both his C-47 and once in his Cesnna 414. Bob and Donna out me up for the night, when we were heading out early for a flight to Reno. Bob and his family are indeed a “First Class Act” and both Bob and Gerry are both missed greatly.
Gods speed to both of you.

I was truly shocked recently to learn of Bob Odegaard’s passing. I had briefly talked with him at the Tunica MS airport a few years back about his Corsair, which he was standing in front of & a more engaging & easy going man he was to answer my questions. While I have been flying GA aircraft since 1956, at the time I hadn’t heard of this remarkable man; however, I got hooked on Max Hayne’s website, and found that Bob was a giant in his field. This tribute says it all, and sad to say that I’ve witnessed too many of these stories over the years, but BOB ODEGAARD will be missed!
