The Washington State Department of Transportation came to the Town of Darrington’s aid on June 11, when a sinkhole was discovered on the airport’s runway.
After closing the runway, assessing the damage and determining repair costs, the town contacted WSDOT for funding assistance. WSDOT determined that the repair work met its Airport Aid Grant Program requirements for emergency funding. WSDOT awarded $38,000 in grant funds for the repair work.
“Fortunately, our grant program has stipulations for emergencies such as these,” said Tristan Atkins, WSDOT director of aviation. “We’re glad we could help to get this important work done.”
Crews working for the Town of Darrington began repair work on June 13 and were expected to be done soon.
