The Silver Wings Fraternity recently presented a $1,250 donation to the National Flight Academy in Pensacola, Florida, to fund a scholarship for a deserving student.
Fraternity Board Member and Vice President Walter Baker delivered the check to Chip Yarborough, Program Director at the Academy, during his personal inspection visit. Funds from the Aviation Scholarship Program are given annually to non-profit aviation educational organizations and to qualified high school and college students pursuing careers in aviation.
“We’re very pleased that our members can support bright and outstanding students studying the STEM curricula in preparation for careers in aviation and space,” said LTC James McCarthy, USAF (Ret), President of the Fraternity.
Silver Wings Fraternity is a charitable and educational membership organization founded in 1958. Its membership consists of pilots and others with a genuine interest in aviation, who endeavor to provide educational opportunities in aviation to young people, and who seek fellowship and camaraderie with aviators worldwide. The National Flight Academy is a program of the Naval Aviation Museum Foundation, Inc., and it inspires, engages and educates by delivering aviation-inspired Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics (STEM) learning experiences, and 21st Century Learning Skills. The five and a half-day Ambition Program is an in-residence educational facility focused on ages 11 through 17, and takes place on a virtual aircraft carrier Ambition (CVT-11), located adjacent to the National Naval Aviation Museum on Naval Air Station Pensacola, Florida. The interior is modeled after a modern aircraft carrier, complete with Ready Rooms, Intelligence & Operations Centers, and extensive simulation space. The curriculum includes aerodynamics, propulsion, navigation, aviation physiology and meteorology, and includes a fully immersive gaming environment. Each mission is aligned to the National Common Core Standards for Math and Science. Ambition Experimental Pilots (AXPs) are taught to integrate math and science into their daily lives by measuring, collecting, analyzing and interpreting data. In addition, critical thinking, communication, collaboration, creativity and other learning skills are valuable assets gained from the experience. An additional area of focus is on 21st Century Core Competencies, to include emphasis on core values, leadership development, peer teaming/cooperative learning, effective communication and public speaking.
