Kissimmee Gateway Airport (ISM) in Florida will close crosswind runway 06/24 around Jan. 2, 2014, for approximately 120 days.
The runway will be undergoing major reconstruction during that time and is not expected to reopen until the planned work is completed.
The main runway, 15/33, will remain open for normal operations for the duration of the project, according to airport officials.
The crosswind runway will be reduced from 150- to 100-feet wide to bring the airport into conformance with FAA requirements. The remaining runway will be milled and resurfaced, and the concrete ends are going to be fractured and overlaid with asphalt, airport officials explained.
The airport is making an effort to be environmentally friendly by replacing all associated runway lighting with LED fixtures and recycling all concrete in connection with the project, officials add.
