Cadet Colonel William Small of the Civil Air Patrol’s Lookout Mountain Composite Squadron in Spearfish, S.D., was recently presented with the squadron level Outstanding Civil Air Patrol Cadet of the Year award by the Air Force Association.
In a ceremony held at the squadron’s headquarters at the Spearfish Airport, U.S. Air Force Maj James Smith, a B-1 instructor from Ellsworth AFB and President of the Rushmore Chapter of the Air Force Association in Rapid City, presented the certificate, medal and ribbon bar to William.
Small, of Piedmont, S.D., the senior ranking cadet in CAP’s South Dakota Wing, has a busy next few months before entering college at the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in Terre Haute, Indiana, in pursuit of a degree in electrical engineering. Later this month, he leaves for Wuhan, China, to a language school for 12 weeks to study Mandarin.
The Air Force Association (AFA) is a non-profit, independent, professional military and aerospace education association promoting public understanding of aerospace power and the role it plays in the security of the nation. AFA recognizes excellence in the education and aerospace fields through national awards programs. AFA presents scholarships and grants to Air Force active duty, Air National Guard and Air Force Reserve members and their family members; and awards educator grants to promote science and math education at the elementary and secondary school level.
