For the sixth consecutive year, Wings of Dreams Aviation Museum will work with the Ninety Nines and SUN ‘n FUN to organize a gathering of the Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP) at this year’s SUN ’n FUN International Fly-In & Expo, slated for April 1-6.
“We are excited that this year we will host six WASP and one WASP trainee,” organizers said. “We want them to be our special guests and honor them for their service and patriotism. They are great Americans and outstanding role models for women of all ages, particularly women pilots.”
WASP attending the show are Nell Bright 43-7, Penny Halberg 44-6, Barry Smith 44-6, Shirley Kruse 44-6, Bee Haydu 44-7, and Kathleen Hilbrandt 44-10. WASP trainee Florence Mascott, 44-10T, also will attend.
Any donation is appreciated, organizers said. They note that a tax-deductible donation of $500 or more will help cover the costs of lodging, shuttle transport, meals and other incidental expenses for one WASP.
All donors will be recognized by placing their name on a display at the Ninety Nines building for the duration of SUN ’n FUN.
Those who donate $500 or more will receive complimentary autographed photos of the visiting WASP. All donors will receive an autographed group shot of the attending WASP. The WASP will be based at the Ninety Nines building from April 2 until Saturday, April 5.
Donations can be made using PayPal or by check payable to: Wings of Dreams (with SUN ’n FUN on the memo line), P.O. Box 357071, Gainesville, Fla., 32635.
The annual WASP Luncheon, organized by the Ninety Nines, will be held on Thursday, April 3, from 11:30 am to 2 pm at the Buehler Restoration Center. A WASP panel will begin at about 1 pm.
The luncheon is $18 per person. This event is open to the public, but reservations are necessary. To make reservations, contact Nancy Wright at 727-946-1050.
