Tuskegee Airmen, Drones headline Virginia Festival of Flight

By General Aviation News Staff · May 22, 2014 ·

SUFFOLK, Va. – The Commemorative Air Force’s Red Tail Squadron will bring their Rise Above traveling exhibit and their rare P-51C to the 17th Virginia Regional Festival of Flight. Plus, for the first time, 10 exhibitors will be showing and demonstrating Unmanned Aerial Systems, commonly known as drones.

Pilots, aircraft owners and anyone interested in aviation will want to attend this May 31-June 1 event at the Suffolk Executive Airport (KSFQ) about 40 miles west of Virginia Beach. Activities include:

  • Saturday – A Car and Motorcycle show
  • Sunday (1 pm) – Airshow
  • Sunday – Young Eagles rides

Throughout the weekend, speakers will present aviation forums and workshops, many approved for FAA Wings or AMT credit.

Bill Harrelson will tell the story of designing and building a modified Lancair IV and then breaking a solo non-stop record by flying from Guam to St. Augustine, Florida, 6000+ miles.

Aircraft and aviation-related vendors will display aircraft throughout the weekend and have the opportunity to give demo flights.

For the first time, free WiFi will be available throughout the display area. Each day enjoy a pancake breakfast, 8am to 11am. A variety of  other food vendors will be offering tasty treats and full meals.

If you plan to fly in, study the illustrated approach procedure on the fly-in website.

Fly-in hours are 8-5 on Saturday, 8-4 on Sunday. You’ll find free parking for cars and aircraft and free under-the-wing camping. Reserve a space for your RV early on our web site in order to snag one with an electrical hookup. Admission is $10 for drive-ins, $5 for fly-ins, per person. Kids 14 and under are free.
