FLG Teardowns opens facility at

SEBRING, Florida — FLG Technics of Davie, Florida, opened its new business, FLG Teardowns, in Sebring Regional Airport’s Hangar 60 this past September.

FLG Teardowns will handle everything from aircraft parts distribution through dismantling, as well as materials recycling for unused parts.

“Aerospace leaders are developing new strategies for management of end-of-life aircraft,” says Michael Elkaim, president.

As the international aerospace community continues its focus on environmental issues and landfill regulations mount, owners are looking for efficient, revenue building and environmentally sound methods for aircraft disposal, he noted. Elkaim has capitalized on this by opening a teardown facility at the Sebring Regional Airport.

Explains Elkaim, “With an estimated 12,000 aircraft retiring in the next two decades, aircraft recycling offers a broad range of opportunities for expanding aerospace business, while at the same time recycling the bi-products of aging aircraft.”

In the near future, with the support of Sebring Regional Airport, the new facility will include an aircraft-painting hangar, and full MRO of components and composites, landing gear, and Auxiliary Power Units, he noted.

Currently, Elkaim has an 18-24 month plan with the support of the airport, which includes the expansion of one of Sebring’s runways to accommodate larger aircraft such as the B767 or A320. FLG plans to set up a heavy maintenance facility to support “C” and “D” checks on these aircraft in new hangars. Required C&D checks are mandated by aircraft manufacturers and regulated by the FAA.

Elkaim is a veteran in aircraft parts repair and distribution. He started as a technical materials planner for a commercial airline in the 1980s and later moved into material sales from 1993 to 1998. In 1998, Elkaim started Flight Logistics Repair Group, recently renamed FLG Technics.
