Picture of the day: Engine art

By General Aviation News Staff · January 25, 2015 ·

Jean-Yves Duplessis submitted this photo of Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum’s Douglas Dakota’s Wright Cyclone R-1820 engine. “I used Corel Painter software to give it the painterly effect,” he reports.

Love those round motors. Twas especially challenging to start the DC-3’s engines on first start of a cold day. Both hands were always fully engaged in the process. The side windows had to be slid open to hear the sounds the engine made to determine what it needed to get it running. Never had to do a rope start but came close a couple of times when the battery started to show signs of weakening after spinning up the inertial starter 3 times. Would like to have seen it done just for the experience. Using a ground vehicle to pull the rope would probably have been the easiest way, but look out if the rope catches in the prop and the engine starts. Yahoo!
