Gerald Olenik sent in this photo from his most recent of six Oshkosh trips with the Zippy Sport. He notes this was the first long trip from Melrose, Florida, for the Kitfox with its new HKS-700e powerplant. He also adds: “There’s just no good way to get around Chicago. This time, just outside class B. The view of Sears tower is a little beyond swimming distance.”
Sure there’s a beautiful way to get around Chicago. Just stay beneath the Class B airspace along the lake’s shoreline. Stay below 3000′, contact Chicago Approach and use the Chicago Terminal Area Chart. ATC is usually quite helpful and view is incomparable, though it was a lot nicer when Meigs was still in operation.
That would work, but this was a NORDO trip. Also, it was first long trip for Zippy Sport with HKS, not Kitfox. Kitfox trip was prior year.
