Classic picture. This is the same place where Chuck Yeager broke the sound barrier some 65 years ago!!
To be precise the sound barrier was broken by Yeager on Oct 14, 1947 in the Bell X-1 over EDW AFB making this year the 68th anniversary of that momentous occasion as Yeager intoned “I think this ole mach meter of mine is broken” as the mach indicator needle suddenly jumped from .98 to over 1.0 and the preceding vibration and buzz of the airframe suddenly dissipated as it became smooth and quieter inside followed by a distinctive “boom” heard on the ground. All but those directly involved in the test knew what that meant. Others thought he had crashed and/or exploded. “Bring her on back and we’ll fix it” replied his Flight Test Engineer. The rest as they say is history.
