SPOT integrated with Lockheed Martin Flight Service

By General Aviation News Staff · June 17, 2015 ·

Lockheed Martin Flight Service (LMFS) will integrate and provide automated position monitoring for VFR (Visual Flight Rules) flights through Globalstar’s SPOT service.

Using a SPOT Gen3 or a SPOT Trace, GPS tracking reports are generated and forwarded to LMFS. The system keeps track of the aircraft and if the aircraft stops moving or stops sending position reports, an alarm is triggered immediately at LMFS, according to Globalstar officials.

The aircraft’s most recent GPS coordinates are available to be forwarded to Search and Rescue (SAR) authorities, narrowing the search radius and providing faster SAR response, officials note.

The SPOT Gen3 also features an SOS button that can send an instant distress message, along with GPS position information, to GEOS International Emergency Response Coordination Center, immediately initiating SAR operations.

For a limited time this summer, SPOT units are 50% off. SPOT Gen3 can be purchased for $74.99 after rebate, with basic service plans starting at $14.99 a month or $149.99 a year. SPOT Trace can be purchased for $49.99, with basic service plans starting at $9.99 a month or $99.99 a year.

Do you know if they are looking at SPOTs as an alternative to 406mhz ELTs on general aviation?

I am unable to find the SPOT Gen 3 at the $74.99 price mentioned in the article. Can anyone post a link where they’ve been able to find it at that price? Thanks!
