Our good friend Albert Dyer sent in this photos, explaining: “Besides the traditional Florida attractions vying for your vacation time, for those with an airplane there is the Shuttle Facility Tour.”
“Vic Krause flew his Cessna 180D to KEVB (New Smyrna Beach) to pick me up and talked about taking the tour over lunch,” Albert continues. “It was an outstanding day for flying and the procedures are pretty straightforward. It was decided that I would fly the tour heading south so Vic could make a video. After the course reversal Vic would fly the tour north, giving me an opportunity to take some photographs.”
When NASA put men on the moon, nothing seemed impossible. Probably be hubris to make such a claim in a present tense, but as a historical observation I hope it wouldn’t offend to say that America was the Greatest of Great Nations.
Yes, flaps lowered a bit to keep it slow so a longer video and photos could be taken, besides, with the view we had, why rush the moment?
What permission (if any) is required before flying the Shuttle Facility?
I have flown over the shuttle runway a few times, I just stay clear of their airspace until I have established radio contact with the tower and then simply asked permission to enter the airspace to do a low pass over the runway, never been refused, The tower is or was open Monday to Friday, weekends it’s closed and if no notams of any nasa activity I believe it’s accepted to approach the field as you would in class E airspace, Although I understand on weekends it is very busy
Flaps partially deployed? Were we trying to hang around longer to take more pics? 😉
