Stratus ADS-B receivers updated

By General Aviation News Staff · July 7, 2015 ·

Appareo, ForeFlight and Sporty’s have introduced a new family of Stratus ADS-B receivers.

The new Stratus 1S and Stratus 2S models offer improved performance across the board, including better ADS-B reception, enhanced thermal capabilities, and a next generation power connector, according to Sporty’s officials.

For professional pilots, Stratus now offers a suite of security options, including the ability to hide the device’s WiFi network and add a password.

Stratus webStratus can also display ADS-B weather data on the Apple Watch for enhanced situational awareness.

For pilots planning an ADS-B panel upgrade, Stratus 1S and 2S can interface with Stratus ESG, Appareo’s new ADS-B Out transponder, officials noted.

Stratus 2S is priced at $899, while the Stratus 1S is priced at $549.

Stratus 1S and 2S begin shipping next week, and will be on display at EAA Airventure Oshkosh.

A video demo is also available.

Stratus shouldn’t need FAA “approval” as such, especially for any non-Part 121 or Part 135 operations. This is equipment of a similar class, of aviation related commodity, like the flying boots you wear to push the rudder pedals, goggles that you wear to fly a Stearman, pencils that you use to write down a clearance, or the sunglasses that you use when landing into the sunset. Each don’t need and shouldn’t ever need FAA approval. Stratus is NOT installed FAR 23 or FAR 25 required equipment. Hence FAR’s like 23.1309 and 25.1309 don’t apply. Period. It simply should fall under the PIC assurance of non-interference provisions of 91.21 for electronic devices. For anyone, particularly in a regulatory agency or ANSP, to assert otherwise, would be a potential regulatory or policy abuse, well beyond the scope of any current coverage of any current regulatory preamble or final rule.

So where does this leave those of us with older Stratus 1’s or 2’s? Are they upgradeable? Is there an exchange program? A firmware and software update? Will the older models be compatible with the ADS-B transponder?
