The “open cockpit days” at various museums are a great thing. I have often thought that those with the room to do so should also run a few of the aircraft, primarily I am thinking of the radial engine craft. I made my living at one time mainlining radials and have found the awe of airshow spectators hearing a radial start for the first time quite startling. I will always love the sound but to see someone that has never heard one experience the lopping rumble of a big radial is truly amazing. The aircraft and even engine does not need to be “airworthy” to run and the audio/visual spectacle of a round engine coming to life will put the “static” museum in a whole different light.
