Aviation education Air-Fair set for S39

By General Aviation News Staff · September 25, 2015 ·

Prineville Airport (S39) in Central Oregon will feature an aviation education Air-Fair Oct. 3-4.

Hosted by Samson Switchblade MMV, the Air-Fair boasts a number of aviation education-oriented presentations, including:

The Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association Rusty Pilot Program, a free course that meets the FAA requirements for the ground school portion for completing the FAA Flight Review. The focus of this presentation is to help pilots who have not flown for a while to get updated and get back into active, safe flying.

Each participant who completes the entire Rusty Pilot presentation will receive an AOPA Certificate of Completion with their name on it and a logbook endorsement for the Ground School Requirements for their Flight Review.

The Rusty Pilot Program will be presented in the Samson Hangar at 9 am Oct. 3.

Also at the Air-Fair will be Aviation Weather Analysis & Self-Briefing, which will be presented by Delia Colvin, an aviation weather expert from Fly-Rite Pilot Education. This is a comprehensive, separate course from the Weather Segment of the Rusty Pilot Program which Delia will also be teaching. There is a special price of $50 for this course, which qualifies for FAA WINGS credits.

The three-hour course will cover Basic Weather System Characteristics, Analyzing Satellite and Beginning Radar, as well as tips for Anticipating Possible Unforecast Weather. She will also cover Mountain Flying, Available Tools to enhance your safety, and Tools for Self-Briefing. The final section of the course is walking through several weather briefings and analyzing potential hazards that may not be obvious.

Also scheduled for the Air Fair is AOPA’s “No Pilot to Co-Pilot” presentation, an updated version of the association’s popular “Pinch Hitter” course. The free program is designed to help non-pilots who fly frequently with someone to perform valuable flight crew duties in the cockpit.

It covers:

  • Aircraft instruments
  • See and Avoid
  • Flight Controls & Controlling the Aircraft
  • How to become a pilot
  • Radio Communications & Basic Navigation * Basic Aerodynamics
  • Airport Traffic Patterns
  • Check List
  • Charts

Each afternoon when courses are completed, Samson will host a short reception with light refreshments and also provide a presentation on the Switchblade and tours of the prototype hangar. Sam Bousfield, the CEO and Designer of the Switchblade Flying Car, will present the same forum he presented at this year’s AirVenture.
