During the landing flare to a private field, the RV-12 encountered a crosswind from the southwest.
The wind pushed the airplane to the north and it landed prematurely on a high berm located to the north of the runway in Hatley, Wis.
The landing gear collapsed and the airplane was damaged by the post-impact fire.
The NTSB determined the probable cause as the pilot did not maintain control of the airplane while landing with a crosswind.
NTSB Identification: CEN13CA569
This August 2013 accident report is provided by the National Transportation Safety Board. Published as an educational tool, it is intended to help pilots learn from the misfortunes of others.
Any information on the specific failure that resulted in the post-impact fire? I know some owners are choosing not to use ELSA and instead go with E-AB so they can modify things like the fuel drain. The standard design protrudes and there is a risk of it getting sheared off if the gear collapse. A popular mod is to recess the fuel drain, but per the regs, any modification means you cannot use the ELSA airworthiness cert.
