Video: Pilot flies slalom course through wind turbines

By General Aviation News Staff · April 18, 2016 ·

As the Red Bull Air Race World Championship heads to Spielberg, Austria, for the second race of the season, Austrian pilot Hannes Arch got in a little practice at the Tauern Wind Park in his hometown of Styria, Austria.

Arch turned one of the world’s highest windfarms – located at 6,200 feet above sea level – into a slalom course, hurtling at speeds exceeding 185 mph around 14 wind turbines. The Spielberg race takes place on April 23-24 at the famous Red Bull Ring, known worldwide as a Formula One venue.

The season kicked off in Abu Dhabi on March 11-12, and after Austria, the series continues to Chiba, Japan; Budapest, Hungary; Ascot, Great Britain; Lausitzring, Germany; and the final two stops in the United States – Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Oct. 1-2 and and Las Vegas Motor Speedway on Oct. 15-16.

Good thing the wind generators where “parked” – it would have been a real challenge to try this when the “fans” were turning!
