Frequent contributor Star Novak sent us photos of the devastation caused by storms ripping through Johnson County Executive Airport (KOJC) in Olathe, Kansas, Monday, March. 6, 2017.
She writes: “These are truly the airplane photos that I hate to shoot,” she said. “To see this in person was overwhelming. There are just no words…”
Damn that Godzilla!
Our flying club’s two aircraft, a Piper Cherokee and a Cessna 150, were stored in these hangars. The Cherokee was on the front row. It looks like the hangar lifted up over it and collapsed behind it. It was still wheels-down, with relatively minor damage. The 150 was in the hangar behind it, and appears to be undamaged, although it will take some time to unbury the hangar.
Sad to see.
This story was shared on Avcom, South Africa’s aviation community website, where I must tell you we all share the heartbreak.
My hope is that insurance is in place, as many as possible get back to flying condition, and that the pilots and owners have access to other machines in the meantime.
Warmest wishes and best luck.
Alan
OMG, once visited KOJC in 2015 with our C208B and it was awesome. Ohh no…. i know what owners and operators are feeling right now. Sorry folks.
A sight like this just breaks my heart.

Climate change?
No! Season change maybe. Central US is known for strong storms with damaging winds.
No, its called the weather . Some days its sunny ,some days its windy, once in awhile there is a storm . The inconvenient truth is that the frequency of bad weather has not increased – just the amount of news coverage any event gets has . When the weather is nice its not news, now – every approaching storm is the “mother of all storms ” and invariably turns out to be nothing .
Well put.
