A tribute to an aviation supermom

By General Aviation News Staff · May 11, 2020 ·

Air Facts Journal recently posted a story by Shane Vande Voort about the aviation supermom in his life, his wife Megan Vande Voort. Besides being a pilot and an integral part of the family’s FBO, Classic Aviation, at Pella Municipal Airport in Iowa, Megan is also a frequent contributor to General Aviation News, supplying many photos for Picture of the Day, as well as shooting at airshows, including last year’s EAA AirVenture Oshkosh.

Shane also gives a nod to his mom, who also works in the family business.

Even though Mother’s Day is a few days past, it’s well worth the time to read the story.

What a great story. Thanks for sharing it with everyone.
Years ago, when I lived in Dallas and was actively flying, my mom and dad came down from Connecticut for a visit. They had never been in a single engine plane before, so I offered to take them up for a flight around the DFW area. They accepted, and we went up after lunch. They were watching everything, as we taxied out to the end of the runway. I stopped and went over the check list and announced we were ready for takeoff.
We had a wonderful flight for about an hour. That evening, we had guests for dinner and the lady asked my mom how she enjoyed the flight. She said that when it was over she really enjoyed it, but at first, she was very nervous, especially when just before we took off, John pulled out the instruction book and started reading it. They are both gone now and I’m 90 years old , no longer flying and live in Allen TX. about 30 miles north of Dallas. We are still laughing about that.

I love this!!! So glad you shared😊

If we are near Allen, we’ll have to look you up and take you flying.

A wonderful story about a very special and talented mom. Love her photos, and now I see why they are so dialed in to GA. Thanks Shane, for writing the piece, and thank you, Megan for sharing your beautiful work!

      Thanks Jim!

Yes, being married to FBO owner, I’ve gotten quite the GA education. But also the opportunity to find beauty in unexpected places.
