The Aerospace Center for Excellence (ACE), home of the annual SUN ‘n FUN Aerospace Expo, will host its Destination Aviation Summer Camp for participants online for the summer of 2020.
Starting June 15, the ACE team will deliver content designed for campers 11-17 years old covering aviation lessons, field trips, and interviews with aerospace professionals. The camp is free.
The six-week camp is presented in partnership with GLEIM Aviation via the Aerospace Center for Excellence Facebook page.
Destination Aviation Virtual Summer Camp is free for all to participate with online lessons, virtual field trips and interviews with aviation professionals.
Those interested in a more robust experience can order a Summer Camp Kit that includes lesson supplies and materials, Destination Aviation Camp Shirt, GLEIM Aviation hat, pilot logbook, and more for $49. A Discovery Flight Certificate is also available to those who register that will be scheduled at a later date.

The Destination Aviation Virtual Summer Camp schedule will deliver content three mornings a week via the Aerospace Center for Excellence Facebook page. Mondays will cover virtual aviation lessons, such as Fundamentals of Flight, Flight Operations, and Aviation Weather. Wednesdays will take campers on virtual field trips to destinations such the Lakeland Linder International Airport’s Air Traffic Control Tower and NOAA’s Aircraft Operation Center. Interviews with aviation professionals will be on Friday, including Caroline Dougherty, Crew Chief for Dougherty Airshows, Captain Aaron Rajanen of Delta Air Lines, and Commander Rebecca Waddington, pilot with NOAA Corps.
“Our objective is to deliver an experience in keeping with the great reputation of our Destination Aviation Summer Camp to as many campers as possible. We want participants to be energized about aviation and our camp. What is exciting this year is that any young person from anywhere can benefit from this camp,” says Kimberly Brewer, director of education of ACE. “Bringing the camp in its entirety online is a challenge but in actuality, we can have even more campers participate than would have been able to participate here to Lakeland, Florida.”
“We are thrilled to partner with the Aerospace Center for Excellence to empower the next generation of aerospace professionals with state-of-the-art training tools to inspire them to pursue their dreams in aviation,” says Paul Duty, Aviation Product Manager and Chief Instructor for Gleim Aviation.
Destination Aviation Virtual Summer Camp runs June 15 through July 31. Details for each segment is available on the website.
