Museum launches virtual Academy for STEM Learning at Home

By General Aviation News Staff · June 3, 2020 ·

SEATTLE — Beginning June 8, 2020, the Museum of Flight will offer online interactive aerospace education programs developed by its Boeing Academy educators.

The new Boeing Academy for STEM Learning at Home will provide families with a series of week-long experiences designed exclusively for students in grades 3-12.

Each experience is designed around a specific theme and is guided by the museum’s educators using project-based learning techniques. The programs offer a blend of hands-on educational activities and virtual community experiences, plus live interactions with museum educators and aerospace professionals.

In addition to guided learning, students will be able to enjoy their studies beyond the scheduled screen times, according to museum officials.

The series begins with Design Week, June 8-12, focusing on the technological principles behind aviation and spaceflight. Depending upon grade level, participants will re-design artifacts in the museum’s collection, design and test gliders, and create spacesuits.

The theme shifts June 15-19 with Space Week, when students can make virtual use of the museum’s Space Shuttle Trainer, design spacesuits, and learn about living on the International Space Station.

The series wraps up June 22-26 with the theme of Forces. Content for that week is still being developed, according to museum officials.

Registration is now open. Fees range from $135 to $185. Tuition assistance is available.
