Athol Franz, the editor of African Pilot magazine, submitted this photo and note: “This is a picture that I took some years ago of a popular South African aviation personality, Menno Parsons, and his squadron parked at Rand Airport (FAGM) in Gauteng, South Africa. The setting up of the picture took over three hours and, then thanks to the airport’s fire and rescue department, I was able to be elevated in the fire engine bucket to a considerable height so that I could capture the overall theme. This airport’s terminal building in the background is one of the oldest in South Africa and is now a national monument.”
