Own a piece of a 172

By General Aviation News Staff · September 28, 2020 ·

The Cessna 172 Skyhawk, first introduced by Cessna in 1955, is the most popular single-engine aircraft ever built. More 172s have been produced than any other aircraft and it still remains in production today.

The Cessna 172 Skyhawk PlaneTag is a chance to own a piece of this well-loved aircraft, according to officials with Sporty’s.

The PlaneTags were salvaged from a Cessna 172K model, #N7262G. This Cessna 172 was one of 759 built in 1970, making 2020 the 50th anniversary for this particular aircraft.

PlaneTags are hand selected, cut, and stamped to be truly one-of-a-kind, company officials note. Each piece will look like no other, and will be assigned a number in the series, officials add.

“You’d be hard-pressed to find a pilot who hasn’t flown a 172,” says Sporty’s Vice President John Zimmerman. “PlaneTags are a practical memento from many pilots’ training experience.”

The Cessna 172 PlaneTag is available for $29.99.

I fly this former aircraft’s sister ship frequently. A little sad to see one get cut up for scrap/souvenirs.

I have flown many Cessna models, but not the 172. Am I missing something?

There’s nothing particularly special about the 172. She does everything you ask of it, fly’s well, and is a very capable aircraft, when flown by someone who understands the type. Reasonably comfortable, not especially fast, but no bad habits. Equally good at training students, hauling a few people, or just joy riding around. The vast numbers produced indicate how much appreciated the type was by pilots. No, there’s nothing special about the 172, but that makes it a fine aircraft.
