One Pilot’s View: The joy of landing

By Loran Maloney · October 8, 2020 ·

I like all phases of flight, including taxi, rotating, takeoff, climb out, cruise, and descent. But the best part of these phases is that they all lead to landings — sweet, sweet landings.

The reward for taking off in an airplane is you get to land.

It is indeed true that no two landings are exactly alike. It is also true that no two pretty girls are exactly alike.

I think landings are like kissing a pretty girl.

You only get to kiss this pretty girl once, and you will never see this exact same girl again, because the next landing will be slightly different.

Enjoy the landing — enjoy the moment!

Sometimes when I am landing on a long, very wide runway, I feel like time slows down. I savor the moment and try to stretch the landing as far as possible because I know when the tires kiss that pretty girl, it’s almost over.

Next is the rollout and slowdown to exit the runway. For me this is like embracing that pretty girl as we say goodbye to this flight.

I love the feeling of decelerating from breakneck speed to near idle in complete control of my plane — and I apologize to those Air Traffic Control folks who wanted me off the runway at the exit I just passed.

On more than one occasion I have probably abused the word “Unable.” Not sorry.

So are bad landings like ugly girls with a bad breath problem?

Sorry, I can’t relate to this comparison. [ besides the obvious].
I find that take offs to be more exciting, going from idle to full power and lifting off the runway….sort of the opposite of jumping off a cliff into a river.!

I find landing takes all of my concentration, getting the pitch trim and power set for a stable descent. The satisfaction comes when the mains touch down with two chirps.!

I hate to be “that guy,” but y’all do know comments like this are part of why there are relatively few women in aviation, right? I mean, you are LITERALLY turning women into objects here.

No , he’s stating how HE feels. Nothing else.

People are too sensitive. It is a metaphor for pete’s sake.

The real joy is a smooth wheel landing then a tail up roll out to the taxiway.

I like it (I think smooth landings are like kissing a pretty girl.)
But how if the pilot is a female, what would she say?

She would say what SHE THINKS a good landing feels like.

My landings usually are like petting a porcupine from tail to nose. 😀

Ditto about the porcupine except I think I just kissed a pretty girl and hope never to kiss the ugly one or a dude 🙁

I am just contemplating how I would replace this, kissing a handsome guy, well, maybe.. laughing here at all you silly guys, and I would laugh at any girls that would take offense at this reference ..
