I gave an instrument rating to a student in an Aeronca 7AC Champ years ago. It had an old vacuum system with a 4-inch vertical gyro. once airborne you got on your knees so you could see the instrument panel and shouted in his ear( no headsets). The student finished up and flew for a major airline.
