Picture of the Day: Over the Grand Canyon

By General Aviation News Staff · December 20, 2020 ·

Bob Bement submitted this photo and note: “I was on a cross-country flight from Flagstaff, Arizona, to my home base of Vale, Oregon (S49). I had to be above 14,500 feet to stay clear of the Grand Canyon airspace. I snapped this picture of the Grand Canyon. I was in my 1959 Cessna 182. I am a 1934 model and so we had 145 years of experience to make this flight. I will celebrate my 86th birthday on Dec. 20, 2020.”

“This was the roughest flight I have made in 40 years of flying,” Bob continues. “24 mph winds, and big mountains, and severe turbulence at times. Instead of taking me 4-1/2 hours, it took me 6. I made a stop in Ely to get fuel and the fuel truck driver told me a 206 pilot on the same route as mine told him he could only make 95-kt cruise speed. I still love to fly at 85 though.”
