Harry Fenton submitted this photo and note: “Our white Champ resting at Bob Hilbert’s airstrip near Marengo, Illinois, after a day of skiplane flying. Some of the best flying of the year is during the middle of the winter with the plane on skis. Landing on frozen lakes and open fields next to farm homes are off-airport fun that can only be experienced during the winter. Despite the cold, if the sun is out, the radiant glow of the sun makes for some ‘warm’ winter days that only northern people understand.”

“Skiplane flying is also a good way to get in some cardio workouts — it takes a lot of pushing and pulling to get ski-equipped planes in and out of the hangar, lots of physical effort to trudge around in snow. Great fun with friends, too, as we try to fly in groups in order to help move planes in and out of the hangar. Winter flying is my favorite flying of the entire year, always a good time…”
