Jeff DeFreest submitted this photo and note: “A Cessna Skywagon on Edo 2960 floats moored at the historic West Turner Lake Cabin in the Tongass National Forest in remote Southeast Alaska. This US Forest Service cabin and many others are available for the public to rent.”

That is too bad. In the 1970s and 1980s, the Territorial Sportsman did most of the routine cabin maintenance, and, cut and split the firewood for the year under the supervision of the USFS. The Sportsmen even paid for their own transportation to and from the lakes.
Jeff, another great photo! For your information in the late 1970s, I flew in the pieces for the “new” Pan Abode cabin at East Turner Lake in Channel Flying’s DHC-3 amphibious Otter. It was a two or three day event with more than a half dozen flights. The Southeast Alaska Territorial Sportsman association did the volunteer construction work at the lake.
Hi Douglas – Very cool history, thanks.
East Turner was one of the first fly-in cabins that I visited years ago. No one had it booked for 4th of July weekend, so I reserved it on Friday, and off we went. I have a pic standing on the Beaver’s float the next morning with cup of coffee watching the fog lift. It was inspiring!
I recall the US Forest Service had a partnership with the Territorial Sportsman when I worked for the Tongass NF, sounded like it was a really active volunteer group. I wish we had those volunteers today. We’re in danger of losing the public fly-in cabins due to apparent lack of interest in them coupled with “shrinking” budgets and lack of cabin maintenance.
