The pilot reported that during taxi to parking at the Lakeland Linder International Airport (KLAL) in Florida, he was following the ground guide’s arm and hand signals.
He made a right turn to maneuver the Piper PA32 between a fence line on the left and a parked airplane on the right. During the right turn, the airplane’s left wing hit the fence post.
The airplane sustained substantial damage to the left wing.
The pilot reported that there were no mechanical malfunctions or failures with the airplane that would have precluded normal operation.
Probable Cause: The pilot’s failure to maintain clearance from a fence post during taxi to parking.
Excitement of SUN ‘n FUN might have contributed to distraction and rush? A good caution for all pilots: Despite ground guidance, the pilot is always responsible (trust but verify)!
This April 2019 accident report is provided by the National Transportation Safety Board. Published as an educational tool, it is intended to help pilots learn from the misfortunes of others.
Marshaller in this case was a volunteer at an aviation event (limited skill/training?) What is our assurance that the person directing the plane is capable and qualified?
So you agree, NTSB pointed at pilot when they should have said, Probable cause was untrained volunteer assigned to direct aircraft to parking.
Totally agree with You, Mr. Wylbur Wrong
Do this with ground marshaling in 121/135 and the Captain/FO is not held liable by the NTSB. Why then is this pilot held responsible if directed into a fence post? Because this is part 91 and no Pilot union.
