Indiana Aviation Hall of Fame inducts legacy class

By General Aviation News Staff · April 22, 2021 ·

CARMEL, Indiana — Indiana now recognizes the state’s aviation heroes, pioneers, entrepreneurs, and innovators.

While the Indiana Aviation Hall of Fame was established in 2010, work began in earnest in 2020, according to officials.

The mission of the hall of fame is to “recognize Hoosiers or those closely connected to the state who through achievement, leadership, exceptional service, innovation, or entrepreneurial spirit have made significant and enduring contributions to the history of aviation and aerospace, the nation, and the world.”

The achievements and contributions of these honored individuals will be enshrined in the Hall of Fame with memorial plaques and medallions for each honoree.

For its first inductions, the Hall of Fame chose 11 people “whose significant and notable achievements in aviation or space flight were previously recognized by induction into the National Aviation Hall of Fame,” officials noted.

Known as the Legacy Class, members include:

  • Wilbur Wright, pioneer of flight, visionary, and inventor
  • Virgil “Gus” Grissom, Mercury, Gemini and Apollo astronaut, test pilot
  • James Allison, aviation engine manufacturer and industrialist
  • Harvey Weir Cook, World War I ace, World War II veteran, and aviation pioneer
  • Frank Borman, U.S. Air Force veteran, Gemini and Apollo astronaut and airline executive
  • Lawrence Bell, helicopter development pioneer, industrialist, and manufacturer
  • Edwin Link, developer and pioneer in flight training devices and flight simulators
  • Abe Silverstein, visionary NASA engineer and space program director
  • Roscoe Turner, aviation pioneer and showman, multiple Thompson Trophy winner, businessman
  • William “Pete” Knight, US Air Force veteran, test pilot, world speed record holder
  • Collett “C.E.” Woolman, founder and chairman of Delta Airlines

Complete biographies of the Legacy Members can be found at INAHOF.org/Members/Legacy.

The Indiana Aviation Hall of Fame will induct the Class of 2021 at the inaugural Honors Banquet on Oct. 1, 2021
