By General Aviation News Staff · August 17, 2021 ·

Gary Lanthrum submitted this photo and note: “A nice look at cooperative aviation efforts. The plane is a PT-22 that was maintained by the Port Townsend Aero Museum in Washington State until being sold to a private party. The director of the museum is hand propping it for the new owner.”

A nice look at cooperative aviation efforts pre Covid-19. The plane is a PT-22 that was maintained by the Port Townsend Aero Museum in Washington State until being sold to a private party. The director of the museum is hand propping it for the new owner.

Was plane SECURELY tied down? I can’t tell from photo. I would never hand prop a plane when depending only on brakes and person in cockpit.. Note: I have hand propped tied down planes many times and am still here.

Wrong prop position! The blade should be at 8 o’clock for the Kinner! Almost lost a good friend from this. The Kinner is easy to start .. an 8 o’clock position will enable the starter to walk away from the prop and the impulse coupling (as Richard Bach once wrote) will take the prop blade right out of your hand.

A friend of mine has a PT-22 and use the 8 o’clock walk the prop through method. He makes it look easy….
