Massachusetts Senate tables $1,000 landing fee proposal

By General Aviation News Staff · September 23, 2021 ·

A proposed bill in the Massachusetts State Senate that would have created a $1,000 landing fee for general aviation in the state has been tabled.

Julian Cyr

“The state’s Committee on Transportation reported the bill to study on Sept. 2, which effectively means it will not be advancing any further in this legislative session,” Senator Julian Cyr (D), sponsor of the legislation told Aviation International News.

Before being tabled, Cyr told AIN he planned to “extensively revise” the proposal.

The fee was proposed to reduce carbon emissions generated by what Cyr sees as “luxury aircraft owned by the ultra-wealthy.” From feedback he received from aviation advocates, it’s “clear that more exemptions should be included, such as prorating the fee based on the size of the aircraft,” Cyr told AIN.

Yeah if you voted for trump…we all got what you voted for. Thanks a lot. Im an independant and a pilot and I look at both sides of the isle and beyond. Maybe if we all did that we could find answers that were not so one-sided on so much.

I do agree with the bit about the damn SUVs and rednecks driving around in their diesel pickups. What about a higher tax on them? (That sounds one-sided i guess but try living in Florida with so many of these assholes.)

I recently read that aviation contributes around 2 percent of the carbon footprint.

Could you please focus long enough to explain to us all how former President Trump is responsible for the proposed $1,000 landing fee in Massachusetts. And how driving an SUV or a diesel pickup qualifies you to be called an “asshole”.

It is exactly people like you who are causing so many people to be at each other’s throats.

That’s the Democrats answer to everything, I don’t like it, so I don’t want anyone doing it.
$1000 landing fee in the whole state of Massachusetts? That would kill general aviation in the state. I’m surprised New Jersey Democrats didn’t think of it first. Yeah, NJ, where you can’t ride an ATV anywhere in the state because it might leave a tire track in the pine Barrons. Apparently, Mr Cyr thinks anyone who owns an airplane is rich and should be punished for his opulence. He’s worried about the carbon footprint of the relatively few airplanes the fly in the state, meanwhile, what has he done about all the fuel guzzling SUV’s and trucks on the state highways? Many of the airplanes in the state burn less fuel per hour than many vehicles on the highways there. Another misinformed politician who unfairly attacks his constituents instead of coming up with real policies that will help. Today’s Democrats are not what they used to be.

Perfectly said, unfortunately, the people who didn’t vote for him have to live with the ridiculous policies he comes up with too.
Hopefully, the legislature in Mass is a little smarter than this guy and won’t pass this ridiculous legislation.
