G1 America, the U.S. importer for G1 Aviation of France, has been named a dealer for Aerolithium‘s line of lightweight aircraft batteries.
Aerolithium manufactures aviation specific batteries for the experimental aircraft market. Each battery includes a digital Battery Management System (BMS) to protect against overdischarge, overcharge, overvoltage, short circuit, current limiting, and redundant temperature sensors for thermal protection and cell balancing, according to company officials.
As an electrical engineer, I prefer the simple lead-acid battery and will account for the 18 pound difference by leaving out 3 gallons of fuel [ 20 minutes of fuel for me, or for the ‘heavy’ pilots, lose some weight !].
Lithium batteries have some sophisticated electronics to control the charge/ discharge rate.
But the more concerning characteristic is that it will disconnect when the remaining charge is 15-20%, leaving you with NO volts, when the charging system fails.!
A lead-acid battery will recover somewhat if the load is reduced, and may still supply 11 volts..
