A video recently posted to YouTube by Aviation Way counts down its top five single engine piston airplanes. The list includes some obvious favorites, including Mooney, Diamond, Cirrus and Cessna. But can you guess the order?
After watching the video, let us know in the comments below if you agree with list. If you don’t, what order would you put the planes in? What planes are not on the list that you think should have been?
OK, as far as new SE GA aircraft, these look like the best sellers. But selling only 200+ per year, is pretty poor ROI. Maybe the $345k to $769k prices slow the sales…. about the average cost of a home in the USA.!
A better option is a refurbed existing M20, C172, C182 . Even an older SR22.
Going fast at a lower cost means building /buying an experimental, like an RV7,RV10…for 1/3rd the cost of those new a/c.
Then there are those of us flying 50-60 year old aircraft that have a value of a lot less than $100k.
What. Criteria. Mine are affirdability. Fun. Suitbility. My favorites: Sling TSi. Grumman Tiger. Autogyro Cavalon. JMB VL3.
Just look at the top on line ads. Cessna, 182, 172. Piper, PA 28 series. Beechcraft, Bonanza series, Mooney. Cirrus.
My choice is the Doctor killers.
Totally dependent on grading criteria.
Comanche 260, Mooney M20J, all of the RV models, C172, Comanche 400
“….obvious favorites….“?
J-3, 7-ECA, PA-12, C-185, DHC-2

It’s missing it’s majesty Pipistrel Panthera!
Wonderful aircraft from a fantastic manufacturer!
I love it!
Vans RV-10 performance equal to SR-22 (see AOPA head to head tests) at much lower cost and you get to build it yourself!
Walt, how’s the resale value of the Van’s RV line?
