I’m not sure what the issue is? I’m not trying to be argumentative with any commenter here but correct me if I’m wrong, but back country pilots use this technique all the time using water to slow down before landing on a sandbar or some other short strip bordered by water. I have seen this used in Alaska on numerous occasions. In looking at the photo, he appears to be alone so it’s not an issue of careless or reckless and from the picture I don’t see any property that might belong to another that could be damaged. For someone of my limited abilities and flying skills, (not to mention I fly tricycle gear), I would not try this myself but would trust each pilot to evaluate the level of his/her own skills and the capabilities of the plane as to using this technique. I have seen other videos and photos put out by this pilot and while some of the flying he does, I would not attempt due to my limited capabilities, choice of plane, and no desire, I have not seen him do anything reckless. I admit I haven’t seen everything he puts out but what I have seen appears okay for the type of flying he does and seems to enjoy. Some would say STOL drags were careless and reckless flying just off the ground. Just my opinion.

Good observations, but the FAA would most likely disagree if something went wrong. You can bet his insurance company would.

Sadly, soon airshow and fly-in STOL contests will end after the first causality accident liability settlement.

Nice day. NO Location, NO Date, NO Time, NO Tail number. Very crafty.

I wonder how many times water or sandbar or beach skimming WASN’T so successful?

PS: for those of You ready to fire-back that I’m a ‘snowflake’ or ‘marshmallow’: I have been investigating USAF mishaps since ~1983. The variety of ways for someone to die in aviation is remarkable. Who will try this next?

Why would GAN showcase irresponsible flying after preaching safety for decades?
