What went wrong?

By General Aviation News Staff · May 16, 2022 ·

John and Martha King, co-founders of King Schools, will be featured on the May 18, 2022, MentorLIVE broadcast from the National Association of Flight Instructors (NAFI), with their presentation, “Tragic Air Ambulance Crash at Gillespie Field: What Went Wrong?”

“The tragic crash of an air ambulance Lear 35 resulting in the death of two pilots and two nurses provides a sad opportunity to use the PAVE risk management tool to analyze this catastrophic scenario for beneficial insight,” NAFI officials noted. “John and Martha will demonstrate how instructors can teach their students to apply risk management to their own flying.”

The PAVE flight risk assessment checklist covers questions on the Pilot, Aircraft,
enViroment, and External Pressures. For example, you may be asked how much rest you’ve had, how much time you’ve had in the aircraft, and what the weather conditions are for your destination. Based on the answers you supply, a total risk score is calculated.

“There are risks associated with every flight,” John King added. “The aviation community will benefit from the habit of analyzing them proactively.”

MentorLIVE will broadcast on Wednesday, May 18, 2022, at 8 p.m. Eastern. To register, visit Mentorlive.site/program/56.html. All MentorLIVE broadcasts are WINGS approved and available in the FAASafety.gov archive immediately following the broadcast.

MentorLIVE is NAFI’s monthly, live-streaming broadcast airing on the third Wednesday of every month at 8 p.m. Eastern. The programs feature experts from many aspects of the flight instruction industry to help CFIs be more successful in their training endeavors. All presentations qualify for WINGS credit. Since its launch in August 2017, more than 90,000 aviators have participated in MentorLIVE.
