Test your piloting skills at the Okie Derby Proficiency Rally

By General Aviation News Staff · June 22, 2022 ·

A pilot gets ready to test his mettle during the 2019 Okie Derby.

The 46th annual Okie Derby Proficiency Rally will be held Aug. 20, 2022, at Sundance Airport (KHSD) in Oklahoma City.

Sponsored by the Oklahoma Chapter of the Ninety-Nines, the rally is a fundraiser for the chapter’s Wings of the Future scholarship. Since 1990, the Okie Derby has generated more than $70,000 in funds for aviation scholarships, according to chapter officials.

But there’s more to the derby than raising money. It’s also a chance for pilots to “polish their piloting skills,” officials noted.

The Okie Derby is a cross-country proficiency rally of approximately 200 nautical miles for single, multi-engine, and experimental aircraft. The derby is flown during daylight hours under VFR conditions and conducted on a handicap system.

Pilots submit speed handicaps to the nearest nautical mile per hour and fuel estimates to the nearest 10th of one gallon for the aircraft they will be flying in the Okie Derby. The winner is the pilot who flies the closest to their speed and fuel estimates.

The Okie Derby is limited to aircraft possessing a range of approximately 225 miles without refueling.

Aircraft must have a current annual and/or must be within their 100 hour inspection, if applicable. All aircraft must have proper entries in their log book.

Aircraft must have communication capability in the frequency range of 118.0 to 129.5 MHz.

Each contestant must carry a minimum of bodily injury liability and property damage liability insurance on the aircraft to be flown in the derby, officials added.
