The Hickory Aviation Museum, which is now housed in the terminal at Hickory Regional Airport (KHKY) in North Carolina is getting new digs.

The Hickory City Council took the first step towards development of the new building by approving a $1.2 million contract in late June 2022 with an architecture firm to design the new facility.

According to a report in the Hickey Daily Record, the museum will share the new building with Catawba Valley Community College.

City officials estimate the cost for the new building will be $22 million. Most of it, $15 million, was appropriated in the state budget in 2021.

The newspaper report notes that the museum has raised about $3.6 million of the $7 million it needs for the new building. Fundraising efforts are expected to expand this summer.

The museum contains airplanes, artifacts, and more from the Golden Age of Aviation, World War II, to present day.
