That’s one way to get to OSH22

By Ben Sclair · July 13, 2022 ·

Dave’s 48 state challenge.

There are only so many ways to get to EAA AirVenture Oshkosh. Fly your own plane. Drive your own vehicle (car, bus, motorhome, motorcycle, bicycle, truck). Airline in. Hitchhike.

Most of us want to get from home to OSH as efficiently as possible for the show, which takes off July 25 — especially with fuel prices being what they are.

Apparently Texan Dave Tillema didn’t get that memo. Dave left Southwest Texas July 9, 2022, with the goal to make it to Oshkosh, Wisconsin, in less than two weeks flying his Zenith CH 750 Cruzer.

Should be no problem. A straight line from West Houston (KIWS) to Oshkosh (KOSH) is just 914.4 nautical miles according to SkyVector.

Dave Tillema

Except Dave is planning to touch down in all 48 contiguous states in the U.S. along the way.

You can follow Dave on Facebook and Flight Aware.

Dave left from southeast Texas (not southwest Texas), just south of Houston from the old Clover Field (where I learned to fly) now called Pearland Regional.

The fundraising website – https://www.givesendgo.com/G3ESE – for the 48-state challenge says “Flight starts July 9th, from west Texas, weather permitting.” Dave repositioned his Zenith from his home base of southeast Texas on July 8, but officially started the challenge on July 9 from west Texas.
