A newly renovated aircraft viewing area is now open at Falcon Field Airport (KFFZ) in Mesa, Arizona, offering “terrific views of aircraft, Red Mountain, sunsets and historic murals,” according to airport officials.
The viewing area at one of the busiest general aviation airports in the country is open daily. You can get there directly from the terminal building parking lot. Just follow the sidewalk, which is painted with runway markings, airport officials note.

The viewing area features:
- A clear plexiglass fence facing out to the airfield
- Benches for seating, as well as picnic tables and chairs
- Free binoculars
- Shade sails
- Two airplane-shaped seats for children
- New grass turf area
- Historic photographic murals
The historic murals are among 16 murals that have been installed in recent years on buildings and facilities to commemorate Falcon Field’s role as a training base for British Royal Air Force and U.S. Army Air Corps pilots during World War II.

The updated viewing area is the “latest in our continued efforts to bring the community, youth, and families to the airport and foster an interest in aviation so that future generations will want to pursue careers in the industry,” said Airport Director Corinne Nystrom.
For added fun, visitors can stop in the airport administration office during business hours for a free toy glider to fly in the park, airport officials add.
In the regulated environment we live in today, I wish every public airport would create a space like this.
