Registration is now open for pilots, spectators and volunteers for The Ozark Backwoods Challenge (OBC).
Organized by ArkanSTOL, the third annual event is scheduled for Sept. 28-Oct. 2, 2022, at Byrd’s Adventure Center (51AR) in Arkansas.
The challenge is inspired by the “challenging terrain of the Ozarks and the friendly competitive spirit of its flying community,” according to ArkanSTOL officials.
“It is designed to challenge pilots with extreme knowledge of their equipment and abilities,” officials added. “Byrd’s provides a unique setting where off-airport flying skills, in a variety of aircraft, can be witnessed up close. The combination of timed competition and precision maneuvers create a thrilling spectator experience.”
According to organizers, pilots sum up the The Ozark Backwoods Challenge with the tagline: “How fast can you go slow?”

But it’s not just a flying competition, ArkanSTOL officials said.
“It is dedicated to providing a fun and informative gathering for anyone interested in aviation and the outdoors,” they explain. “The OBC features family-friendly Southern hospitality, live bluegrass music, delicious food, and camping.”
“Opportunities to learn more about the professional attitude, discipline, and equipment required in backcountry flying will be available from the scores of on-site vendors, as well as hundreds of other pilots,” they added.

Open to all pilots “with extreme knowledge of their equipment and abilities.” So, what are the qualifications? Likely just the means to afford a $200k aircraft with oversized tires. And the prize goes to the fastest stall at 50 feet. Please, quit playing with my insurance rates!
