Create your own race

By General Aviation News Staff · August 17, 2022 ·

Registration is open through Sept. 15, 2022, for the Air Race Classic Air Derby.

Teams consisting of at least two female pilots can register for the one-day create-your-own race, a twist on the traditional Air Race Classic long-distance endurance air race.

The derby was initially created as a way to continue the Air Race Classic air racing tradition during the COVID-19 pandemic restrictions.

It’s also a great way to learn about the Air Race Classic, according to organizers, who note the one-day derby is more financially feasible for those interested in getting involved in air racing.

Additionally, the open geographical opportunities to participate allows more women pilots to race than the traditional Air Race Classic may, as teams from all over the world can participate, race officials said.

During the derby, pilots must fly VFR along an approved self-designed route. A greater variety of aircraft may participate, including sport and experimental aircraft, organizers said.

The derby routes must be flown between Sept. 23 and Oct. 1, 2022.

There are just 99 spots available for registration, according to organizers.
