Sporty’s 2022 ornament features the Ercoupe

By General Aviation News Staff · October 18, 2022 ·

Sporty’s Crystal Christmas Ornament for 2022 features the Ercoupe.

This year’s ornament is the 38th in the series.

The Ercoupe is a low-wing aircraft that was first flown in 1937. Its iconic design is recognizable on any ramp, and the lack of rudder pedals was a revolutionary innovation at the time, Sporty’s officials noted.

The Ercoupe was the first aircraft certified by the Civil Aeronautics Administration (CAA) as “characteristically incapable of spinning,” leading to the marketing of the “World’s safest plane.”

More than 5,600 Ercoupes were produced between 1940 and 1969, with many still flying today.

The Ercoupe ornament is $24.95.

I love my Ercoupe 415-C. It’s such a fun plane to fly. On hot days I can fly with an open cockpit! On windy, cross wind days it is a treat to take it on and gracefully crab in and land. It burns very little fuel, 4.5 gallons an hour consistently and cruises around 100 mph! I enjoy the 360 degree visibility in our beautiful PNW! What’s not to love!!

And I am the proud owner of a 415C, without rudder pedals, and flew it yesterday in a “Flour Drop” at Eagles Crest Aerodrome (DE25) in Delaware. That ornament will hang from my Christmas Tree this year!
