Since its founding in 2017, membership has grown quickly in the Central Colorado UAS club — so quickly, in fact, that it’s spurred a name change for the organization to Mountain West UAS (MWUAS).
According to officials, the new name “more accurately reflects the populations that are being served and the extent to which the organization continues to provide its educational and public outreach initiatives.”
The name change was unveiled during the club’s 10th Fall Roundup held in September 2022. The event, which attracted more than 100 professional drone pilots and amateur enthusiasts from multiple states, included drone racing and demonstrations at the Buena Vista Drone Training Park in Buena Vista, Colorado, which officials say is the first official drone training park in the nation.
The park provides a venue for free public drone use and was made possible by grants from Chaffee Community Foundation, the Ray Foundation, and individuals, officials said.
MWUAS also sponsors drone education programs at local school districts to support local workforce development. The organization also holds monthly in person and online meetings to offer information and expand members’ knowledge about advances in drone technology.
