Fall flying in Colorado got a strong start with the Colorado 99s Let’s Fly Now event at Vance Brand Airport (KLMO) in Longmont on Saturday, Oct. 1, 2022.
More than 35 people — mostly young women — were given free, 20-minute flights by experienced pilots who donated their time, aircraft, and gas. On the ground, 27 volunteers helped organize the get-together to promote general aviation among young people, especially young women.
“We definitely achieved our goals for introducing people to the joys of flight,” said volunteer Gretchen Jahn.

She pointed out that some parents even joined their children in the airplanes.
One of those parents, Rayelle Galler, was especially excited to participate.
“I think it’s fantastic,” she said. “We already have one pilot in the family and we’re hoping for another.”
Older daughter, Makayla, 17, has her glider pilot certificate and just soloed a powered aircraft. Her younger sister, Cheyenne, was excited for her ride and to begin training.

Participants were able to learn about local flying opportunities, including powered flight and gliders, and got information about joining the Colorado 99s. They also got a goodie bag with a Colorado sectional and other gifts.

Let’s Fly Now coordinator Audrey Grace, who is a student pilot, was thrilled with the success of the event.
“I have never worked with a group as enthusiastic, committed and, above all, as supportive,” she said. “That is a reflection of the quality of the 99s. We support each other in our aviation endeavors, we give back whenever possible, and we open up opportunities for others who are beginning their journey in aviation. I would start working on another Let’s Fly Now! event tomorrow.”

Aircraft that were kept busy during the event included a Cessna 185, two Cessna 182s, a Piper Archer II, and a Piper Dakota.

99 here, and proud of it! I love to see this!
I dont know how people can afford to fly these days? I had to give it up. Im glad they can. I sure miss flying cross Country.
It’s…rough. it’s not affordable or easy to make time for. Then you’ve got the weather to battle as well. As discouraging as it may seem, if it’s something you’re passionate about, you can always revisit it. Flight isn’t going to go away!
